October Featured Artist: Nergis Mustafa
About the Artist:
Nergis Mustafa’s work explores the notion of visual dreamlike images interspersed with a profound reality- a reflection of the multi cultural world she inhabits. She orchestrates a combination of painting, collage and drawing to create imagined and surreal landscapes. The form, composition and colors are meticulously used to construct a poetic canvas. Colors sooth or jar, float or sink—revealing the artist's current state of mind.
There is a constant tension between the precision of her line drawing set against a loosely painted background — figures and floating objects, (abstract and realistic) existing in the same plane.
Always exploring new methods and techniques in her work, Nergis uses mixed media, charcoal, watercolours, egg tempra, oils and acrylic paints, to seamlessly create a landscape at once both familiar and unique. As life is ever changing and evolving - so is her work— yet there remains a consistency in its ethos that has itself become her signature “style”. She often explores symbols and ornamental motif's drawn from her rich Pakistani heritage.
Nergis Mustafa is a Houston-based artist, trained at the Glassel School of Art, affiliated with the Museum of Fine arts in Houston.
Find her at The Silos at Sawyer Yards, Studio 214 and at her website www.nergismustafa.com
About the Project:
As musical ensemble-in-residence for Sawyer Yards, Houston’s own Loop38 is partnering with seven visual artists from the Sawyer Yards community to present workshops, demonstrations, and performances that explore the world of graphic scores. Every Second Saturday, a resident artist will select one of their works of art to serve as that day’s musical score. Curious listeners and contemporary arts lovers will witness the classically-trained musicians of Loop38 turn each visual masterwork into an aural delight.
