Julius Eastman – A Houston First

  • First Congregational Church of Houston 10840 Beinhorn Road Houston, TX, 77024 United States (map)

After his eviction and early death at just 49 years of age, Julius Eastman’s body of composition was nearly lost.

Through the efforts of his friends and colleagues, many of Eastman’s scores and recordings, which had been thrown into the street by his former landlord, are beginning to enter back into circulation. Loop38 is proud to perform the first-ever Houston performance of Eastman’s music: we present his evening-length piece Femenine, one of the few for which an original recording exists, in a new arrangement by our co-director, conductor, and percussionist, Craig Hauschildt.

We supplement this monumental work with music from David Lang: his Increase is a suspenseful work of minimalism composed for large ensemble, which develops hypnotically and inexorably to its climax.

On the Program:
David Lang (1957-) – Increase (2002)
Julius Eastman (1940-1990) – Femenine (1974)

This performance will last slightly less than ninety minutes. Click here for further reading on the life and work of Julius Eastman.
