How one group is changing the tune of concert offerings in the Bayou City

from Houstonia Magazine's "Striking A Chord"

Loop38 is a 16-person collective of passionate musicians bringing new music to the heart of Houston. Co-founded by Yvonne Chen, pianist, and Jerry Hou, conductor, Loop38 is comprised entirely of Houston transplants, specializing in new music presented at the highest artistic level. Its members hold degrees from The Juilliard School, Peabody Institute, Cleveland Institute of Music, Yale School of Music, New England Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, University of Michigan, University for the Arts in Bremen, Germany, and Oberlin Conservatory and the musicians use their unique experiences at all of these places to inform their interpretation. Their 2016-2017 season consisted of an opening concert of new virtuosic works at the MATCH, an evening of light + sound at the Turrell Skyspace "Twilight Epiphany", and "Music in Darkness: Georg Friedrich Haas' in vain" at Rothko Chapel. Their innovative programming shows the diversity of music composed in recent years, as well as the ensemble's flexibility in having the richness of a full orchestra and the intimacy of a chamber group. They aim to create unique aural experiences for the community, record and disseminate new works, and provide resources to further enjoyment for listeners and performers.
